Multiple Sclerosis is a neurological disease that strikes young adults typically between the ages of 25 to 50. This is a stage of their lives when they are just starting new families or building the foundation for the rest of their lives. Over the last several years veterans have been diagnosed with MS at a disproportionate rate to that of the civilian population.
As the cause of MS has never been determined it is impossible to say what has triggered the patient's immune system to go into hyper drive and begin attacking the insulation around the nerve endings. Was it in the immunizations that military personnel are given that the typical civilian never receives? Was it exposure to Agent Orange during Viet Nam or nerve gas during Desert Storm? Was it contact with inert biological or chemical munitions in Iraq? Or was it none of these and just a genetic "luck of the draw?" We may never know. What we do know is that there are veterans that gave freely of themselves to protect our country and our freedom that are not receiving the benefits that they deserve.
Veterans Fighting Multiple Sclerosis was founded in an effort to develop a network of veterans helping each other. We are trying to provide peer counseling, education, and other assistance to those veterans that might not be able to find it through different avenues. We stand tall for those that can't.
